The parallel between what the Pope calls “pontifical secrets” and what U. S. presidents past and present call “executive privilege” is inadvertently examined in separate pieces on this website today. The Supreme Court says wiretaps during the Bush years were illegal. The court of world public opinion increasingly accuses the Papacy of covering up criminal acts of abuse.

So, to the question, is anyone above the law? The answer is, yes. Society created them.
