The parallel between what the Pope calls “pontifical secrets” and what U. S. presidents past and present call “executive privilege” is inadvertently examined in separate pieces on this website today. The Supreme Court says wiretaps during the Bush years were illegal. The court of world public opinion increasingly accuses the Papacy of covering up criminal acts of abuse.

So, to the question, is anyone above the law? The answer is, yes. Society created them.

The hope and promise of the Obama administration was that America could get out from under the control of corporations and special interests. He said the only thing standing in the way of a public option in health care was his occupancy of the White House and majorities in both houses of Congress. Look at the health care bill. Does it in any way break up the monopolistic control of the health care system by private insurers? Look at the Obama administration. Do you see faces of change or do you see the same insiders and lobbyists that Obama the candidate said, “would not find a home in his Administration.”

Those that see this health care bill and the makeup of the Obama team as anything less than agents for the status quo are seeing something different than I am.

What’s the difference between a new washing machine and this Administration? Answer: You can’t take this Administration back to the store when it doesn’t do what it says it will. Obama the candidate said the only thing standing between Americans and a public option was a majority in both houses. Americans delivered the majorities but Obama repaid them by not delivering a public option and a continued monopoly for private health insurers. Not even a fancy washing machine could spin that into a victory.
